PrintHouston 2019 - Print Demo at the Glassell School or Art

PrintMatters Houston in conjunction with the Glassell School of Art is pleased to announce PrintHouston 2019 Biennial: James Surls at the Glassell, the featured multi-event honoring renowned artist James Surls, consisting of an exhibition of prints, a lecture of the art history of Surls prints, and a Surls print demonstration workshop, will commence the seventh city-wide international biennial celebration of the art of printmaking.

The featured kick-off event held the 2nd weekend of May 2019 will begin with the exhibition, The Houston Suite, a collection of 10 brand-new, never before seen selection of prints created by James Surls and printed from the Houston printmaking studio shop, Burning Bones Press, as well as selections from decades of printmaking by the artist. The exhibition’s opening reception will be held Friday, May 10, 2019 from 6:00 pm through 8:00 pm at the Glassell School, Orton Gallery. The exhibition is to be on view for the public from Sunday, May 3 through Sunday, May 20, 2019 during Glassell School hours of operation.

PrintHouston 2019 Biennial: James Surls at the Glassell continues the opening weekend with two featured public events on Sunday, May 12, 2019. With an introduction by artist and dean of the Glassell School of Art, Patrick Palmer, James Surls will conduct the PrintHouston 2019 keynote lecture from 1:00 pm through 2:00 pm in the Glassell School Favrot Auditorium. Surls will speak on his journey creating art for over 70 years, including insights into his latest creation of prints from the coinciding featured exhibition, The Houston Suite.

Surls continues the PrintHouston festivities later in the same afternoon from 2:30 pm through 4:00 pm at the Glassell School Hevrdjes Printmaking Room with an intimate demonstration, printing one of his newest prints. Surls will conduct this rare public studio demonstration with the assistance of, Pat Masterson printmaster of Burning Bones Press, Alexander Squier, Glassell School printmaking faculty, and Cathie Kayser, print artist and co-founder of PrintMatters Houston.
